Makalu Base Camp Trek

Makalu is the fifth highest mountain in the world, and its Base Camp Trek is so remote that it receives relatively few visitors. It is located east of Everest, situated in the Makalu Barun National Park, which offers a wide specter of culture, nature (flora and fauna) and exceptional views.Although isolated, it is reasonably easy to reach, with daily flights to Tumlingtar. It is also possible to 'jeep' to the start (bit long journey).

The trail follows the terraced farmlands inhabited by the Rai, Limbu and Sherpa peoples. As the trail ascends, we leave the rhododendron forests, which bloom in amazing red, purple, pink and white flowers during the spring. Higher up we reach the Barun River Valley, with its steep granite cliffs, glaciers and rushing rivers.

The National Park is home to a wide range of rare plants and animals, including the Red Panda. On going above Makalu Base Camp you may glimpse a rare view of Everest and Lhotse to the west, and Kanchenjunga in the far-east. With Makalu, of course, towering majestically above you.
