A super alternative to the Everest Base Camp trail (EBC). You may not come ‘as close’ to the giant peaks as on the EBC trek, but you are compensated in that there are normally less people in the area and a feeling of wilderness prevails.
‘Bit like the rest of the Khumbu was 15 or 20 years ago, which has a charm in itself – recommended!’ - Dr. Tor Magne Lund.
Day 01: Welcome to Kathmandu (1360m), airport to hotel transfer. Trek planning, permits and equipment check etc. Welcome dinner with Guide.
Day 02: Half day sightseeing, followed by shopping and last minute preparations.
Day 03: (1). Early morning scenic Flight to Lukla (2880m), gentle trek to Phakding (2610m).
Day 04: (2). Continue through small Sherpa villages to reach the entrance of the national park at Monjo (2834m), where we spend the night or we continue to Jorsala (2750m).
Day 05: (3): Now we follow the river, crossing it twice by photogenic hanging bridges, before we start the ascent of the steep hill to Namche Bazaar (3440m).
Day 06: (4). Acclimatization day in the capital of the Sherpa people. We can visit the museum, or take a side trip up to the Everest View Hotel.
Day 07: (5). A steep yet enjoyable ascent to Khumjung (3780m), where we are have great views of Ama Dablam (6814m), one of the most majestic mountains in the world.
Day 08: (6). Trek to the Mongla Pass, birthplace of Lama Sanga Dorje, then a steep descent is followed by a gradual ascent to Dole (4200m).
Day 09: (7). Now we follow the left bank of the Dudh Koshi Nadi (river), to reach the settlement of Machchhermo (4470m).
Day 10: (8). Gokyo (4790m) is our goal today, a village of lodges overlooking the lake.
Day 11: (9). An early morning climb up Gokyo Ri (5360m), affording an enjoyable scramble, to reach its summit with its 360 degree viewpoint. Amazing sights, you can ‘almost’ see Tibet! Descend to lunch, and then continue down the valley to Nha (4400m).
Day 12: (10). Descend to Phortse (3810m), along the high trail, on the opposite side of the river, which gives a totally different perspective to the valley than when we ascended. This village is famous for its potatoes - said to be the best in Nepal!
Day 13: (11). Sorry, but it’s a steep hill ascent to the pass at Mong, but there will be a welcoming mug of tea waiting for you. Then we descend to Kyangiuma, lunch, before we continue to Namche.
Day 14: (12). We now turn our backs on the Sherpa capital, and descend the long hill we had worked our way up a week previous, now wondering what the fuss was all about, to eventually reach Phakding.
Day 15: (13). We ascend to Lukla, reconfirm our tickets, and have a farewell dinner with our porter staff.
Day 16: (14). Fly to Kathmandu, transfer to hotel.
Day 17: Kathmandu – sightseeing, shopping, or simply resting. Note we always advise a minimum of 1 day here incase flights are delayed from Lukla.
Day 18: Depart.
Snow Dragon Eggs: Two to preferably three extra days are necessary should you wish to cross ChoLa (5368m) and ascend to Gorak Shep (5140m). Here to return, or either ascend Kalapathar (5550m) or visit the Everest Base Camp (5364m).
