Everest Region (also known as the Khumbu) lies at northeastern part of Nepal; bordering its northern territory to Tibet. It is the common home of mountain legend Sherpas, lofty peaks and elusive Yeti (the scalp of Yeti is preserved at Khumjung monastery).
The elevation of Khumbu ranges from 3,300m (11,000ft) to 8,848m (29,029ft), the summit of Mt. Everest. The Khumbu region comprises both Sagarmatha National Park (above Monjo) and the Sagarmatha National Park Buffer Zone (Lukla – Monjo).
The Khumbu Glacier located at the base of Everest is believed to the part of great Ice Age – some 500,000 year ago.
Buddhism is the pre-dominant in Everest region. There are plethora of ancient monasteries, Gompas, Chortens, Prayer Flags and Wheels, Mani Walls and evidence of spiritual awareness in the region. Tengboche Monastery is the largest and most sacred pilgrimage site in the region.
Mt Everest (8,848m), Mt Cho Oyu (8,201m), Mt. Lhotse (8,516m), Mt. Nuptse (7,861m), Ama Dablam (6,812m) and Mt, Makalu (8,485m) are the major peaks in the region. Every year thousands of trekkers flock the region to enjoy the panorama of Everest and Khumbu glacier.
Everest Base Camp Trek, Everest Three Pass Trek, Gokyo Lake Trek, Gokyo Ri Trek, Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek and Everest View Trek are some of the best and popular treks in Everest region. Every year about 25,000+ trekkers visit EBC and more than 1,000 mountaineers make their way to Everest summit. As the Everest expedition permit costs is whopping and is full of mountain thrills, many people choose to trek to its base camp – which is no less adventure!
If don’t have enough time to train but expedition is on your list, then trekking peaks are the best options. Island Peak (6,189m), Mera Peak (6,476m) and Lobuche East Peak (6,119m) are frequently trekking peaks in Everest region.
Namche Bazaar is another touristic hotspot; located amidst of Sagarmatha National Park. Surprisingly, it houses many restaurants, bakeries, internet cafes, ATMS and shops. It is the heart and soul of Khumbu and most prosperous town of the region.
Walking here can be less challenging than ups and downs in Manalsu and Dhaulagiri region, but it is at high altitude and careful acclimatization is needed to adjust your body in thin air. Almost every adventure starts from Lukla (30 minutes flight from Kathmandu) and the only way to reach Everest is via foot trail (unless you can afford helicopter).
Everest Base Camp Trek provides a variation that ranges from the mid-hills, alpine meadows, to a barren rocky landscape all set below magnificent Himalayan peaks. Add prayer flags flapping in the wind, the traditional Sherpa buildings, the chant of monks, and the clang
A super alternative to the Everest Base Camp trail (EBC). You may not come ‘as close’ to the giant peaks as on the EBC trek, but you are compensated in that there are normally less people in the area and a feeling of wilderness prevails.
