In the Shadow of Everest - Base Camp Trek

Everest Base Camp Trek provides a variation that ranges from the mid-hills, alpine meadows, to a barren rocky landscape all set below magnificent Himalayan peaks. Add prayer flags flapping in the wind, the traditional Sherpa buildings, the chant of monks, and the clang of yak bells, then walking in The Shadow of Everest is the ‘Royal-trek’ of Nepal.

This trip is offered by many agencies as a Lukla/EBC/Lukla trip of 12 days. We believe 12 days is to short, with the risk of altitude sickness, and evacuation. Our 14-day program allows for responsible acclimatization and enjoyment of the nature and the culture. We can provide a 12-day itinerary, but register our doubts.

Day 01: Arrival. Transfer from airport to Hotel, trek planning, permits, equipment check etc., with your guide.

Day 02: Breakfast followed by a half day of sightseeing. Shopping for anything you may have forgotten and packing. Issue of Permits.

Day 03: (1). Very early breakfast, followed by a scenic mountain flight to Lukla (2,800 m), with your guide. Here you meet your porters, and together we trek downhill for 4 hours to Phakding (2,600m).

Day 04: (2). We take a leisurely trek through the alpine landscape, passing small villages on the way, to enter the Sagarmatha National Park, at Monjo. From here we continue to Jorsalle (2800m) to spend the night.

Day 05: (3). Now our path takes us alongside a rushing river, before we cross the photogenic ‘Namche Swing Bridge’. From here we the start a long hill ascent in the cool morning air, to reach Namche Bazaar (3,440 m), in time for lunch.

Day 06: (4). Rest and acclimatization day in the capital of the Sherpa people. Visit the National Park Museum, and/or The Everest View Hotel (3800m).

Day 07: (5). Trek along the finest 3-hour scenic walk in Nepal, with ‘peaks upon peaks’ so close you can almost touch them. A steep descent to lunch (ski pole recommended), followed by an equally steep ascent to Tengboche Monastery (3,860m). We visit the monastery, and/or the museum, to continue to our nights stop, Deboche (3700m).

Day 08: (6). Trek to Pangboche (3930m), continue to Somare (4100m), then to Pheriche (4275). Here we attend the high altitude lecture at the Himalayan Rescue Association medical aid post. Here we can check the oxygen saturation level in your blood.

Day 09: (7). Rest day. Walk over to Dingboche (4410m), and for those who wish we take a walk to a small Yak-high mountain farm. Time to read, time to reflect.

Day 10: (8). From Dingboche a barren trail, with spectacular views, leads to the teahouse settlement of Thuglha (4,620m), lunch. From here we continue to Labuche (4,930m), a Klondike type settlement, with great evening views of Nuptse (7,864m) and Pumori (7165m).

Day 11: (9). Trek to Gorekshep (5,140m).

Day 12: (10). Subject to your acclimatizing, you may choose to rest or take a walk along the moraine. Alternatively, trek to the Everest Base Camp (5,357m), or up to the spectacular view point of Kalapathar (5,545m). Descend to Labuche.

Day 14: (11). A hard day’s walk to Thangboche. Great evening/morning views.

Day 15: (12). Tanngboche to Monjo.

Day 16: (13). Monjo to Lukla.
