Annapurna Region Treks

Annapurna Region is quite unlike any other part of Nepal both geographically and culturally. A lush sub-tropical forest to rugged and rocky barren landscape and 55km Annapurna massif - a truly blessed region!

Annapurna region lies in north-central Nepal and includes one peak over 8,000m, thirteen over 7,000m and sixteen plus peaks over 6,000m. The 55 km long Annapurna massif is bounded by the world’s deepest gorge, Kali Gandaki on the west, the Marshyangdi River on the north and east and Pokhara Valley on the south. Annapurna I at 8,091m is the tenth high peaks in the world and first ever 8,000m+ peak to be climbed.

The entire Annapurna region is protected by Annapurna Conservation Area within the territory of 7,629 sq km. It is the first and largest conservation area in Nepal. The region is home to the finest treks which includes Annapurna Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit and Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek.

Annapurna in Sanskrit means the Goddess of the Harvests. Hindu believes this Mountain as Annapurna Devi – the universal and timeless kitchen Goddess – the mother who feeds to everybody.

The majority of people in Annapurna are Magar and Gurung – a Tibetan-Bermo Community. They are known for their bravery in British Gurkha Regiment. Whenever you decide to explore here, there’s no doubt this is the prime trekking area in the Nepalese Himalayas.

Annapurna Conservation Area

Annapurna Conservation Area covering 7,629 km square ranges from an altitude from 790m (2,590ft) to the tenth highest peak, Annapurna I 8,091m (26m545ft). The conservation area shares its territory to Manang, Mustang, Kaski, Myagdi and Lamjunga Districts.

The conservation area was established in 1985 and conserved by the National Trust for Nature Conservation. It is home to over 100,000 residents of different cultural and linguistic groups. About 1,226 species of flowering plant, 102 mammals, 474 birds, 39 reptiles and 22 amphibians thrives in the region.

The Kali Gandaki Gorge which is 3 miles long and 1.5 miles wide is a valley with fossils from the Tethys Sea dating 60 million years ago. The region also thrives world’s largest rhododendron forest in Ghorepani. And Tilicho Lake, at Manang, north of Annapurna massif, is the world’s highest fresh water lake.

Gurung and Magar are dominant in the south whereas Thakali, Manange and Loba are the major community in the north. Each ethnic group has their own culture and speaks their own dialects.

The nature and cultural features of ACA lures about 60% of total country’s trekkers. Tourism, over years, have been strongly established as one of the important sector of local economy. There are more than 1,000 lodges & teahouses and hundreds of other subsidiary services to pander the thousands of trekkers, pilgrims and their support staff.
